the hermès sac bijou kelly is a flagship creation from the maison's "haute bijouterie" division, designed by pierre hardy (creative director of hermès jewelry). released in 2012, this piece deconstructs the iconic kelly bag into a feat of goldsmithing and gemology. the body is not a rigid casting but an articulated 18k rose gold mesh. this fluid structure allows the bag to move and slump slightly, mimicking the suppleness of a leather bag.

the "skin" of the bag is created using 2,326 pink sapphires totaling approximately 80.52 carats. hardy utilized a combination of princess cuts (square) and round brilliant cuts to te the varied scale pattern of niloticus crocodile skin—using larger square stones for the "belly" scales and smaller rounds for the contours. the bag is fully functional, with a working turn-lock closure, and is accompanied by a removable black silk satin strap lined in calfskin, allowing it to be worn on the shoulder or displayed as an objet d'art.
